Red Rose Ride - 13th June, 2010 - A report from Janice
Having woken to the sound of rain at 5.30 I thought it was going to be yet another year where I didn't get to do this ride. For the past 3 years for different reasons I've been unable to do it. Anyway as it started to fine up at 7am I decided to go for it as I might not get another chance - So JK, Paul and myself in our Imperial Wheelers colors set off along with several others for a long day in the saddle. It was a bit too fast for me at the start as we were riding along with Ian Robinson, Nigel Hartley and Paul Gower from the Condor but after 6 miles or so we parted company from them when they chose not to follow the official route!!!!! We headed through Keighley and over to Barrowford, Sabden and into Whalley for a welcome drink of tea.

On leaving Whalley we had chance to give a cheer of encouragement to Sean in his road race and then it was new cycling territory for me and a new hill to walk up!! The Trough of Bowland and it was here where the weather began to turn, just after thinking I'd made a mistake in wearing my gortex boots. After another cuppa at the turn point Glasson Dock it was a very wet and unpleasant 60 miles home passing through Garstang & Inglwhite to Longridge where we thought it was brightening so took the rain jackets off but not for long.

With my boots full of water (yes the rain was so bad) we climbed up out of Burnley then it was a welcome decent down into Todmorden, needing to warm up after this though I went into semi time trial mode to bring us along to Luddenden Foot. I ran out of steam at this point which I knew I would but not very pleased at someone sitting on our tail having an easy ride all along the valley road going past us and breaking away so with a helping hand from JK we hunted him down on the last section of Burnley Road passing him just before the top. Then it was the last descent down to the control room and some very welcome cups of hot coffee and refreshments made by the ladies of the CTC.
We completed the 202km in 10hrs and 53 mins which gave us an av. speed of 13.94 a real achievement in my opinion A very wet day but on the whole also a very enjoyable one.

Early season win for Sean (30/03/10)
In just his second race of the year, Sean Smith won race one of the North Midland Saturday Road Race Series held on the 27 March. In the 38 mile TLI handicapped road race, Sean started in the scratch group which worked well together to overhaul the two groups ahead of them. It's was while catching the front runners in the last 8 miles or so that a break of 4 formed off the front consisting of Marc Mallender and Simon Keeton of the Rutland CC, a junior rider and Sean. In the sprint finish into a tough headwind Sean jumped with 150 metres to go and was able to hold on to first place to the line. Simon Keeton finished second and Marc Mallender third.
